We hiked the East Bank trail to the south end of Ross Lake today. Perfect weather for a hike with a 6 year old, and was super impressed with the use of masks and social distancing by all users of the trail. Enjoyable day. Looking forward to an attempt on Clark and Luahna next weekend.

I'm visiting the 'rents in White Salmon. I think it was Wednesday did a mellow hike with my mom. Somehow I'd never hiked along the Salmon River that drains some of the south side of Mt. Hood. Did about 2 miles out and then turned around. Trail stays near the river the whole time, which is quite scenic. Some big cedars, various flowers blooming. Overcast day but it didn't rain, we had a really nice time. Today I headed up on the north side of Hood. TH just beyond Laurance Lake, up to Elk Cove. Went a tad bit clockwise on the Timberline Trail to the next good view. Good vantages of Hood off and on along my entry trail. I'm going to get the honor of taking my oldest nephew on his first backpacking trip in a few weeks and I thought this would work good. My scouting trip was a success and confirmed this should be a nice destination.

'Scouting for Newts along i90. The road in reminded me of the Phelps Creek Road, my poor car. Met a hardcore paddle boarder on the way in... This family looked like they were having fun! Mom said she teaches her kids to pick up litter, super cool 'ma!!! #LeaveNoTrace Right balance of overgrown, rocks, roots and caring peeps. No Newts but I did ponder a future off trail traverses. Nice Sunday jaunt. Some bugs but no blood was donated.

Malachite Peak north route is described well on summitpost. Boot path most of the way. Crampons would be useful now for steep snow slope. Go around to climber's right near top for easy class 3.

Decided last minute that we needed to put foot (and paw) to trail today. With an errand in Fall City mid morning necessitating a crack of noon start and a dinner engagement that evening, we figured we'd stick with something moderately close on the i-90 corridor. But as we drove up the pass our hearts sank as we witnessed the hoards of hiker vehicles parked almost down to the freeway adjacent to the social media bucket-list hikes. We started worrying whether or not our hopefully more secluded hike selection would indeed deliver solitude as expected. It did. We were on the trail just under four hours, and during that span we crossed paths with three other hikers. Less than one person per hour! Not bad. Sure, we didn't have the most fabulous views nor the pristine alpine lake with the light Coppertone sheen. But nor did we notice any TP florets, off leash pups, or the sharing of any trail music. And we did get some nice views - one great panorama spanning from Kaleetan to Stewart. And up close, plenty of Paintbrush, some Tiger lilies, and lots of tasty huckleberries. Not a bad day on the trail.
