4-6-14 - Hex Mountain
To snowshoe or not to snowshoe, that is the question. Deep(ish) snow followed by bare ground was par for the course.
Looking north from the summit. Summit ridge. Cle Elum Lake.

Arrived in Bremerton today. Before meeting with HR for Harrison Medical Center, went to Lions Park and got to see the Olympics as they were being enveloped by clouds. After my meeting with EH, went to Scenic Beach State Park. So glad to be here!

Ranger Falls, MRNP a few Sundays ago with kid and somebody else's alleged kid. The kids giggled & gossiped. A little whiney on the uphill. Intense greenery. Humongous trees.
It was a good day. Any day is good when The Offspring WANTS to hang with the old man.
No traction devices needed.
No cell service = No kids with faces buried in their phone.
No "are we there yet?"
One requisite photo of proof.

Drove maybe 14 miles up FR17 from South Skagit Hwy yesterday, stopped by snow. Walked out to Bald Island at the end of Rawlins Rd. off Fir Island (Conway) today. Rainy yesterday, beautiful today.

Elbo Creek(892.1) and Buck Mountain (ONF, across Hwy 101 from Mt. Walker) trail on Sunday 6 April 2014: Trail was in good condition all the way to blowdown/clearing, but unfortunately went right into the clouds. The way trail to FS Road was well marked and easy to follow (not sure what FS the number was). Followed the road west, then hooked right to the north east up to the first Buck Mtn antenna location. Once at the antenna station, followed a short way trail to a rocky point, and then offtrail another hundred yards or so (following the blue 'X's) to the higher antenna station (a wooden shack built around a conex box) that appeared to be the summit of Buck Mt. Only lingering snow patches on the roads on the north side of the ridge line and at the summit. I got completely turned around in the clouds (was going west, thinking I was going east) but eventually walked down the entire spur road (060 I think) back to FS 2620, and then followed that back down to the TH. Nice trail/trip but will have to go back when I can actually see more than 400 yards (and also go tag Mount Crag).

Went up Mt Townsend today Apr 12 2014 from the lower TH (thanks Patrickb87 for the road status). There is still significant amounts of snow on the trail beginning roughly 1/2 or so mile beyond when you cross the Wilderness boundary right up until you reach the summit ridge, as patrick mentions, traction devices would be recommended for the compact ice portions. Saw a total of ~18 people on the trail today. The light wind on the ridge top was cold, glad I had gloves/hat/warm jacket. Spent an hour or so up top and then headed back down, off trail via the ridge heading due east from the summit, and ended up back on the upper TH access road after veering south at ~ 4700'. Beautiful day with perfect weather and views!

Duckabush Trail to Ten-Mile camp, ONF/ONP 26 April 2014:
The Duckabush trail is in excellent condition to the ONP boundary (the WTA did a fantastic job clearing out the trail and tackling the blowdowns! It was "smooth gliding" along the first ~7 miles of the trail). There were maybe 5 blowdowns to ten-mile camp, but nothing too difficult to maneuver over. There was a small herd of Elk (8-15) hanging out between the ONP Boundary and Ten-Mile camp, I had forgotten how large those beasts are!!
Found that thieves had stolen fuel from my vehicle upon returning to the TH, kind of downer, need to buy locking gas cap, but at least I still had enough to get home!
