After a little help from NW Hiker trip reports, we found the secretive Deep Creek trailhead and followed it up the forested section, over and under windfalls, to the split for Noble Knob. From there we headed up the ridge to Mutton Mt. We put on microspikes near 4400', then switched to snowshoes at 5200. The summit views were amazing in all directions, from the Olympics to Mt Adams to Mt Baker, Stuart and more.
Oct 27, 2019 update.
First time up to Mutton Mt. via the Deep Creek trail off Hwy 410. We started at the end of Forest Service road 7170. Long sections of the route go through the burnt forest from the Norse Peak fire of 2017. Maybe stay way during high wind days. The trail is clear of fallen trees, perhaps thanks to the mountain bikers?
Snow starts at 4700 feet. About 6 inches of powder near the summit. Glad the sun was out but didn't enjoy the wind so much. Around 10 miles roundtrip with 3700 feet gain. Didn't see anyone else today. Carried ice axe and microspikes but did not need to use them today.
