I'm glad to hear that you describe it as "untrammeled" and BigSteve describes it as without a "tread"
FTR, there's a tread on most of the Blum climber's access, an old angler's tread on some of the lower part of the Ipsoot Lake access (pioneered by tough guys like Dan Sjolseth and Cliff Lawson, now gets used every few years), and a goat trail on sections of the Porkbelly Ridge aka Berdeen Lake Route access. Other than that, it's pretty much treadless up there, although game trails occasionally aid travel (but more often will lead you astray). It would be a pity to see treads resulting up there as a result of Peggy's published route. Travel in that corner of the park is prime for exploration via numerous different routes by experienced off-trail hikers with navigation skills. I have been available to share information, have posted a couple TRs with route information and have privately provided more detailed info -- but never via drawing a line on a map.

Thanks, BigSteve, you and Tom are schooling me on the better ways to communicate about . . . and enjoy . . . this section of the North Cascades. I've nibbled at the edges of it, but not yet enjoyed the main course of an extended traverse.

On the bright side, if Peggy Goldman's high traverse route descriptions are as accurate as some of her previous route descriptions, those areas are certain to remain untrammeled thanks to her book. doof.gif

i agree; big bummer on the drawing a line on a map for those high routes. seems like ms. goldman just likes to upset people (since, i am told, she more or less stole the scramble information from the mountaineers and then made a book out of it for the 1st edition). i'm sure there's no way to scream loudly enough to have this information retracted. bawl.gif

It's not like the Blum/Bacon traverse is really unknown or one the the remotest areas of the park. I wonder if the NPS will be up on those traverse areas more now.

Which one? Lots of ways to go up there. That's the point.

I wonder if the new edition still has a photo of Silas' butt in it...

I now have the new and the old book. I'm still planning on finishing the old book, which in my opinion is a pretty great list of trips, but have done some that are only in the new one too. Have found plenty of inaccuracies which are part of the challenge. I kind of like that you still have to be on your toes and do your own route finding. Many of the errors were corrected in the new book, but a big uncorrected one is that she does not mention the closure of the road to the Three Fingers TH. I do note a lot of similarity between her descriptions and ratings and the mountaineers, but since she had been a mountaineer trip leader i am wondering if that is because she wrote many of the mountaineer scramble trip descriptions.

For those of you who are into peakbagging lists, someone entered the 123 peaks from "Washington Scrambles" into Peakery
