The Santa Fe Ski Area is only a 30 minute drive from the city of Santa Fe... and makes for a convenient launching pad to reach some 12,000 foot peaks... especially when the ski area has closed for the season. With a plan already in place to climb Wheeler Peak (13,161') on the 21st, we used this snowshoe trip to try and acclimate to the high altitude that waited for us in a few days... with the idea being that if we couldn't do this trip, we definitely wouldn't be able to do Wheeler. We parked at the base (10,350') of the ski area and followed the "Santa Fe Super Chief" chairlift to its top (11,200')... where we turned eastward and slogged our way to the top of the tower-laden Tesuque Peak (12,043')... where a very brisk wind drove us off of the summit... as we continued north along the ridge over to Deception Peak (12,320+). Broad views from the summits of both peaks... with Deception Peak having more ambiance than Tesuque. We made a loop out of the trip by locating the top of the "Millennium" chairlift... then staying north of it for most of the trip back down to the car. ~5 miles roundtrip... gaining ~2180 feet of elevation. Map and photos of our snowshoe trip to Tesuque Peak and Deception Peak. ..

"Teanaway 70" Peaks List... a guide to hiking and scrambling in the Teanaway Area. ----------------
