My wife and I are heading to Britain in a few weeks and we figure we'll need maybe 500 pounds worth of currency for the time we're there. Anyone know the most favorable way to exchange dollars for pounds?

yup. At least with my bank ATM I get great exchange rates for Pounds, and no fee, when I use my Debit card.
I NEVER use my credit card - poor exchange, high fees and a foreign fee, to boot. (bank of America)
Do let your bank know where/when you are traveling if you plan on using the ATM debit card.....I got caught short when I didn't do that one time.

Thanks!
So even when using the ATM for a different bank (I assume there aren't too many branches of USBank in England), you still get the best deal that way?

Yes, look for the ATMs that don't charge a fee on the UK end (which is almost all of them).
Have fun!

If you're a AAA member they do the exchange without a fee (at least they did 4 years ago at the Bellevue store).

As a matter of fact, I am in AAA, but I didn't know that. Thanks for the TIP!

I believe ATM is very good option, I used my Bank of Am. debit card in different counties, most of the time, I just get charged per use fee by local bank, and then exchange fee by my bank... I think it is good option for not carrying too much cash on you, and having access to your bank account.
Have fun in England!
DISCLAMER: England is one of the few counties in Europe I actually have not been to... (if you don't count being in London airport for few hours)
