Haven't seen anything from Slugman in a while. Working, hiking, hiding, what do you suppose?

When I started posting on this site, he was like "godfather" of NWhikers, had opinion almost on every tread. Even that I did not agree with him on every comment, I miss him (and some others) on this site.

That's rich considering how inflammatory he often was.

That comment will always encourage others to NOT participate. I liked Sluman's comments on trail selection and gear suggestions.
I disagreed with some of his political comments. BUT, they were followed by reasonable discussion.
cairn builder, was your comment reasonable/appropriate?

I see some merit in what you're saying. It's hard to know someone from interactions on just the internet. But I disagree with your main point. In fact, I think the (somewhat limited) anonymity provided by the web brings out the inner, uninhibited personality more so than face-to-face. Just like driving a car - are you more likely to flip off the big jerk that cut you off on the highway or the same person that cut you off in the grocery line. My guess is most (of those that would flip someone off to begin with) would prefer the windows for protection.
When I see vile and hateful comments made on the web, I'm inclined to think that's more the real person any more. It saddens me though...thinking that some people smiling and talking nice to my face could in fact be phoney....."ass hats".
I suppose it could work the opposite way too; a really noce person on the web is a jerk in face-to-face. I doubt that would be occur very often though.
Not making any comments about anyone in particular here by the way. Just an observation about what you said, about having to hike with someone to know them.
