Hmmmm...how about adding a halftime show with "costume malfunctions"? That'll get viewership on the rise...

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

There's an old joke asking "what do you call a bad hockey player in Canada?" Answer is "a baseball player". Maybe this applies to the US when you compare American football players and soccer players. Although a lot of the soccer countries may have fewer other sports to pursue. Hmmm

There may be biting in soccer, but there's NO crying in baseball! Bonus points to whoever posts the reference first...

I'll cut to the bottom line: Soccer is perfect the way it is. Like anything worthwhile, it's takes about 10,000 hours to reach this level of understanding however.

I believe I've seen similar things written about haggis, lutefisk, and tripe. wink.gif

and mountain climbing

Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

So it seems that Team USA fans are ecstatic today after we lost in a thriller 1-0 game in which we had zero actual shots on goal and our opponent admits to not trying all that hard because the game was meaningless to them. I willingly admit to being in the global minority in not seeing any sort of excitement to this whatsoever.

Trying to get a clue about what I'm missing. I may find the sport boring, but the conversation about why that's so is not. smile.gif

CC, Fair enough. Here's a decent start... http://www.cbssports.com/world-cup/eye-on-world-cup/24598600/and-now-belgium-a-first-look-at-the-uss-next-world-cup-opponent Like chess, most soccer matches are won or lost in the midfield. That's the 1st place to analyze our chances on game day. USA coach was forced into an unusual formation(1-5-4) when our #2 forward, Jozy Altidore, blew a hamstring in 1st game. This new formation has proved fortuitous when things go right like in the Portugal game because we get more push/control though midfield due to additional player. IMO, the one style of play USA must avoid is to bunker in the defense and then hope for a counterattack or long balls over the top. Unfortunately, in the WC knock out rounds, this style becomes popular because teams play not to lose. (An early goal for either side can sometimes help this situation) Finally, and there's nothing anyone can do about this....the games are more fun to watch when you know some of the players...Ronaldo, Schweinsteiger, Van Persie, Robben, Di Maria, Messi ....these are all guys that play for the biggest teams in Europe. For me, the familiarity just makes it more exciting and easier to follow action. Good luck. For me, baseball is unwatchable. It is just too slow. NBA hoops is a close second...when only 3-4 guys score 200 points a game it becomes redundant. Tom

IMO NBA hoops would be improved if the net were raised 2 or 3 feet.

The only thing more boring than soccer is listening to people trying to convince me that it isn't boring. You never need anyone to explain why American football is exciting. It just is.

It’s amusing to observe how many of those that dislike soccer feel obligated to offer unsolicited views on the short-comings of the sport. It could be a twist on the old vegetarian joke! “How do you tell if someone hates soccer? Don’t worry – they’ll tell you.” I suspect there are plenty of NWH’s that are not fans of football, baseball, or basketball. But they seem secure enough in their opinion to keep it to themselves. Or maybe I haven’t scrolled deep enough into the archives to dig up the dirt...
