Ill be camping on the Loop for the holiday and Im thinking about running up Painted Mountain tomorrow. Would be nice to have company. I will be moving pretty fast
Last weekend, I left TH @7:25; on Red summit @11:50 (3 days' overnight gear and 3 qts.). If you like alpine snow travel, you should be able to get to Black Mt almost entirely on snow. soft-enuf, no postholing. I was there last weekend
At pt. 6716 I think you might want to drop down on the north side and follow the snow, continuous to Black summit. S gully descent from Black is dry (or steep snow). From there, snow travel all the way to Red Pass with only minor rock scrambling in a coupla places. Some people do it in a day but I was happy to have 3 days to let it soak in and wallow in it.
NOTE: I saw debris from a rather large cornice collapse N side Black, but that's not the way you'd be going.
Some people have better things to do with their lives than walking the dog. Some don't.
