finally did the tyler to false baldy loop thanks to our nwhikers lurkers, Lisa&Neil. our friend, Blaze, joined in on the fun! it's up up up and more up up...then over...and up up up, and finally down down down down! whew!
i know this hike has been done and trip reports written before so will just post photos. first off, the weather was perfect, a bit warm, and lots of mountains/peaks for our weary eyes up.gif on the way to the summit
on tyler peak and wildflowers
traverse to false summit of baldy

that's all! thank you nwhikers lurkers and blaze for an awesome loop hike!

Still gotta go back for Tyler. Did Baldy last year. Did you take the same trail up and back or do a loop? I.E. Tyler trail and/or Maynard Burn? I came up Tyler trail and down Maynard Burn. Kinda wondered how it might be going DOWN Tyler trail.

we went up the steep trail to Tyler Peak, then traversed to the false summit of baldy, and down the Maynard Burn (i think). when we got to the old logging road, we walked it back to the car. (i guess Lisa and Neil usually take the last bit of downhill that's across from where you pop out of the woods, cross the road, and connect through the woods again and back to the car) yes, we did the loop. i wouldn't want to go down the Tyler trail shakehead.gif eek.gif

I came down the Tyler trail a few weeks ago. I have always taken the Upper Maynard Burn Trail on my return in the past, usually because I'm over on that side of the drainage hitting Baldy or Greywolf and don’t want to walk the ridge all the way back to the Tyler trail. I found going down the Tyler trail much, much better than the UMB. Sure, the Tyler trail is steep but there are a few spots that "level out" for a bit. The UMB is an unrelenting 2 miles of steepness. Oh, and no water on the UMB(during the summer months) until you cross Mueller Creek at the very end.

Exactly what I was wondering about coming down the Tyler trail vs MB. Never came down Tyler. I also did the loop so to speak. I hated the last mile of MB. It seemed steeper and I was really longing for the trailhead. The upper parts seemed less steep. Maybe I was just tired too.

either way, it's up up up and down down down. eek.gif we carried enough water for the whole trip, so going down the upper mb, we still had extra to get us back, so the lack of water on that trail didn't matter to us. that hike day was warm, too! oh, icky flies on summit of tyler down.gif

How is the road up to Tyler Mountain?

YouTube | SummitPost Saw the depths of despair. Now I am salvaging what time I have left on Earth.

the spur road is okay if you drive slow on it. Neil had his big truck so....i was sitting in the back and really didn't take notice of it. it's doable though up.gif

I drove up it in 2012 in my Maxima. Zero issues. It was actually better than some other roads I have driven up in that car. Unless something has drastically changed, it should be a piece of cake as long as you don't try and go flying up.
The infamous 1.7 miles of actually relatively decent road.

Too funny! I have it! I was up there on Saturday and picked it up. I was going to tie it to a tree branch at the trailhead but forgot so it stayed in my pack. Found it when I got home. Want it back? I'll probably be back to the NE Olys in a week or two.
