A friend of mine owns the Green Gables store in Verlot, he has a pretty good idea what to stock for campers but is not a hiker so he is open to suggestions.
I realize that most of us prepare pretty well for hiking or backpacking and usually would not stop there since the prices are higher than in town. Although we all forget things sometimes and/or need to resupply. Even though their prices are high, so is the price of gas, so sometimes it's worth it for the convenient location.
I have suggested that he needs to carry the larger size (32oz) Gatoraide and a selection of micro-brews, especially canned varieties.
Thoughts-suggestions?

Propane and Butane cylinders and Coleman fuel. Batteries and cheap but usable headlamps, lighters, fire starters, and Presto logs.

DEET
inventory is a liability, but he might consider:
2-cycle oil (not for the hikers, obviously)
Lip Balm
Sun Screen
isobutane cylinders (? probably have a 24-unit minimum order.)
really outstanding dark chocolate

You'd want stuff for unprepared hikers and tourists, and forgetful or supply up on the road hikers.
local maps and hiking guide books
trail snacks
10 essentials type stuff, flashlights, matches/lighters, knives, compass...
A few low end trekking poles
Sun/rain hats
Sunglasses
Rain ponchos
Camera batteries and SD cards
NW Forest pass
Deodorant
Bear spray
Bug spray & bug head nets
maybe minimal fishing gear?

Actually, we ALWAYS stopped there (back when we lived on that side of the crest). It was the destination stop for a cup of coffee to go, and peanuts for snack. Their coffee was good! And we stocked up on snacks, etc. It's a really nice store with nice people running it.

110 gram fuel canisters, for sure
raingear- even cheap vinyl crud is better than nothing
all local maps- GT and USGS
Backpacking food/dayhiking snacks
used gear selection
good coffee and pastries, wifi and outlets
showers
carcamping
I could basically live there, at that point...

One of the FS campgrounds - Gold Basin - has hot showers. You don't have to stay there to use them.
...
I'd suggest more firewood than he might usually buy. The CG host runs out at times.

Maybe t-shirts? Get somebody to create a few artistic works of the Mountain Loop to put on a shirt--Big Four, historic Green Gables, Monte Cristo? Then the sweaty returning hiker can put on a fresh shirt before they go out for dinner. You might also carry a few historic books of the area.

I agree, and it has improved a lot with the new owner imho. He makes espressos, homemade bread, cookies, ice cream, cinnamon rolls, and egg mcmuffins. The bacon burgers aren't bad and I think their pizza is better than ever. (just wish I could call ahead since they take 45 minutes)
He has limited space so suggestions are much appreciated.
Note: my reason for starting this thread is not so much to promote the store or increase business, it's because my hiking partner who stops there frequently complained to me about their stock...I seek to improve things, for everyone. I will show the store owner this thread next time I go out there.
