If you go to an online site such as Amazon, then type the search term "hiking" in (narrow to Sporting Goods), you will see a list of the most popular items, more or less in descending order of popularity. Ignore the obvious stuff such as clothing, because multiple sizes won't make sense for inventory; however the list is pretty good. Water filters, for example, turn up.
Rinse and repeat for "backpacking" if they want the next layer of market share.

You might want to point out to him that he has what I joke must be the French spelling: Mountian Loop, on his sign (both sides).

Then the sweaty returning hiker can put on a fresh shirt before they go out for dinner. You might also carry a few historic books of the area. |
If there are a enough touristy types, t-shirts would probably be a good money maker. If they had a cool design, I might even be tempted to buy one.

We used to stop at Green Gables religiously on our way home from hiking for chips, candy, a couple bottles of pop and a couple of hotdogs.
Now no chips to speak of, no good chocolate selection, hotdogs only on the weekend and limited pop only by the can.
We've stopped stopping as it's all so disappointing.

Lol, I was sitting in front of the store waiting for a pizza about 2 months ago and noticed something odd about the sign. He told me that a guy offered to make/paint him that sign, they had worked out some type of deal, but when the sign was complete the guy not only spelled mountain incorrectly, he aslo now wanted $1,200. The owner just laughed at him. most people don't even notice.
I have him talked into carrying micro-brew in a can and the Coors light aluminum screw top can that can double as a light water bottle. One thing he is doing right is that he keeps the beer and pop ice cold. I mentioned that I had started this thread and that there were many replies. He said the internet was down but that he would check it out this week, so keep 'em coming.

Read an article in todays Everett Herald about the re-opening of the Verlot store, the new store keepers have signed a 3 year lease. The vistor center, formally located in Granite falls has also been moved to that location. So they will be available to provide area info to hikers and tourists when the Ranger station is closed....it also said they plan to hold hiking classes, lol.
Most troubling info in the article stated that they will not sell alcohol or tobacco.....imo, they have nearly zero chance of success....campers drink a lot of beer, hello! The store took a huge hit to their business due to the closure of the Gold basin campground.

SD cards and Isobutane canisters are the items that spring most readily to mind.
