Longtime lurker, first time poster.
I'm sure everyone is already familiar with the current snow conditions and route for Pugh. So, there's no need for me to reiterate the obvious.
Marmot Salad and I encountered 16 bags of rice and 1 travel size bottle of hand sanitizer at Stujack Pass. I suppose it was placed there for:
1. Cache for a work party?
2. Thru-hike stash for another route?
3. New exercise regimen?
4. Party at the summit?
In any case, I've never seen that amount of food on a somewhat popular trail.
Flowers before the pass. Rice at Stujack Pass. Marmot Salad and Sloan Peak. Blowin' the bugs, man.

Eat too much rice and you gotta go to Pugh.

My guess is that the rice was tossed in a pack for weight to train. Water would have been heavier, cheaper and would make less of an impact to dump.
Looks to me like the person failed miserably if he or she was training. Getting down from a summit and not leaving a mess is more important than getting up to the summit.

Wasn't there Sunday.
What's the ethical course of action? If you find some gear, you leave it, since the owner might be returning to retrieve it -- or, if not critical gear, you can bring it back to the TH (I recently got my favorite hat back that way).
But if you're dumping this much... rice?! I think you owe at least a note of explanation. Guessing 2.5-5.0 lbs., that's 40-80 lbs. of fine food left out for the snafflehounds. What a mess.
Whoever did this doesn't have a grain of sense.
Is there a lost-and-found thread here?

OK, recipe contest. Rules: rice, snow, no other ingredients.
Actually, I guess a lot of people have been living that way for a long time.

Probably someone planning an upcoming wedding ceremony at the pass, the hand sanitizer is so that the rice being thrown at the bride and groom will be clean. Climbers are strange people.

Gosh I hope this has no reasonable explanation, but... preparation for some kind of wildlife project/experiment?

Welcome to the forum. Mount Pugh was my first post also, ten years ago almost to the day!
