Not much of a story to tell, so here's some verbal highlights followed by photographic highlights. Larches galore from below Cutthroat Pass (on the PCT) all the way to Granite Pass. Solitude on Cutthroat Pass and a moment so still and silent that I could hear a ravens wings moving the air as he flew. Stunning views from Cutthroat Pass and beyond. Complete solitude from the time I left Cutthroat Pass on Friday afternoon until Saturday late afternoon when RainieToo's party began to arrive at Snowy Lakes. Beautiful weather on Sunday made up for a rather dismal Saturday. Another hiker on the trail spotted a pine marten just off the trail and was kind enough to share the experience. Luckily, the marten was as curious about us as we were about him; he stuck around for quite awhile before running off. Now for some pics...

Wow, surprising to find solitude around Snowy Lakes this time of year. Bummer about the idiots with fire rings in such a fragile area. Great photo of the marten.

That is one impeccably rehabilitated fire scar, Gwen! Thanks for the hard effort. Bet them rocks were heavy to carry off. Amazing to me that someone will hike ten miles and still have the energy to lift all those rocks to make a ring. Then go foraging for wood when there practically ain't none around, in the mostly open landscape, with any hint of dead and down wood long since picked over. We appreciate your work. J I hope you don't mind the correction but it is "Gold before Liberty Bell, green before Blue Lake Peak"...

Great pic of the marten. Too bad about the yahoos making fire rings up there, thanks for deconstructing it. up.gif Lots of beautiful photos.

Thanks John. I appreciate the correction. I'm often just picking up the map and taking a guess. Good to know what I'm really looking at! Fire scars are a pet peeve of mine. I, personally, don't see the need for fire in the backcountry (unless it's a matter of life vs. death) and if you're going to go there, at least clean up your damn mess. And if you can't even do that, at least try to minimize the damage by sticking to a) keeping it small and b) whenever possible, use an existing ring. Anyway, I learned a long time ago that I can either be a part of the problem (by doing nothing but complaining) or I can be a part of the solution (but cleaning up messes and doing me best to educate folks in a friendly manner).

Although this doesn't float off the tongue quite as easily. So much for poetry.

The Marten shot is terrific, Gwen. Did you name him/her?

It's asinine how people think they need to have a fire and desecrate the beautiful place they came to visit in the first place. Caveman cold, Caveman need fire.

I did not. Got any ideas?

I think it's more like "Caveman bored without electronic gadgets, caveman build fire to entertain caveman." A couple more fire rings spotted yesterday on the Maple Pass loop and several more today in Headlight Basin and around Ingalls Lake (where, ahem, there is no camping?). Feh.
