Any of you on this forum live in SE Oregon/NW Nevada? As a matter of general interest, I receive e-mail notifications of earthquake activity generated by the USGS, and in the past 24 hours there have been about 30 small quakes in the NW corner of Nevada (Black Rock Desert area). These have been in the 3.0 to 4.7 magnitude range (map), and at depths ranging from 0 to 5km. I'm wondering if anyone here noticed this, and if so, what might be the opinion of "what's going on"? The very shallow depths noted is what really caught my attention.

i looked at the site and that is quite a cluster . In the last 24 hours it shows a small cluster of slightly smaller quakes just west of there. These kinds of things fascinate me. I am sure if it gets out into the general news someone will raise the question of Yellowstone.

Perhaps Burning Man is a factor? smile.gif

What's especially fun about sock puppets is that you can make each one unique and individual, so that they each have special characters. And they don't have to be human––animals and aliens are great possibilities

That is very strange! It could be related to the basin and range extension that began roughly 25 mya and for the most part died down 10 mya but like the large quake that raised the Lost River Range in Idaho like 8 feet in 1983, the mountain ranges of Nevada are formed in the same way. Normal faulting (fault block mountains) and these massive fault blocks can still slip even to this day, although rare since the driving force forming the basin and range extension has long been dead. I'll look into it more though

the area north of there around Steens Mountain is a wonder of geology I have a target of getting to know this region once my retirement years kick in.

Sheldon Wildlife area. Large fault escarpment there. A companion to Abert Rim I think. Easy to see in Joey's post. Photos taken near center of swarm.

What do you make of the relatively shallow depths? I see anywhere from 0 to 23km, but most are in the 0 to 5km range.

My earthquake tracker ap on my phone has been lighting up with good sized quakes near lakeview OR (that area). Like 20 in the past 48 hours from 3.0 to 4.7 (my ap is set to ignore anything under 3). Something is going on.

now that I see the picture it is much like Steens. You can draw an imaginary line directly south from Steens to the cluster. Kind of exciting, I wonder what is going to slip and pop out there.
