I'm sure a lot of you remember the old REI store on Pike Street. The rabbit warren of rooms had the feel of a flea market. I was reminded of that store as I was going through some old Mountaineer annuals and smiled at these early REI cartoon ads. The artist was Toly Kojev. Click through to the original size to see the drawings in detail.

I like the new flagship but I sure miss the old flea market. Especially the smell. up.gif

I wish I still had the REI catalogs I use to browse through as a kid. My Dad had been on a business trip and one of companies he visited gave him a calculator (Rockwell calculator, red LED display). I quickly put this device to use calculating up all the gear I would need for an overnight trip. I think it was in the $200 range. (Crestline tent, REI Cruiser pack, Pasayten sleeping bag, stove, cookware). Then I would check my meager Seafirst savings account. eek.gif Hmmm....about $30. Ok, I will need a paper route or something. I would also have to go with a lower price tent like a Eureka. The sleeping bag alone that I finally bought at Jonas Brothers pretty much broke the bank. The wish list was a lot of fun. up.gif up.gif

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.

I checked again -- no REI ad in that issue. Must have been a down year for for the marketing department.

the original rei store was on pike street, but it sounds like you're thinking of the second rei store that was actually on 11th ave between pike and pine streets. the original pike street store was only 1 room above a restaurant, down the hill and on the other side of broadway.

I worked with Toly in the REI ad department, in the early 70's, when I was in college. Interesting place and times.

You're right marzsit, I only started visiting the store in the 70s, and I didn't know that wasn't the original. Could have done more research there frown.gif

I scanned a few more REI ads from later issues of the Mountaineer, mimicking puzzlr's format but showing the full ad in each case. After 1956 the Membership Roster (where the ads appeared) was published separately from the Annual.

Me too. I loved pouring over the old REI catalogs, and later the Early Winters catalog and others. I'd love to flip through some of those old catalogs again. I still have a red daypack from my first visit to REI around 1970. My dad bought me the pack and a first aid kit. We used most of the first aid kit a couple years later on a guy who slid partway down Martin Creek eek.gif but the pack is now a family heirloom.

I still have a McKinley and a Skier sleeping bags. Also still have both a large and a small Cruiser and the Millet summit pack. The packs have all seen better days, but the sleeping bags are still in great condition and still get used now and then.
