I wore out my rei tent last year and my nemo meta 2 wetted out after two days of rain......so Sad. I feel that I have read a thousand reviews on tents but they all seam to be the same with a few exceptions. i changed this post if it feels like you have read part of this already. Tell me your best tent and the worst tent you have ever bought?

My current favorite that I've had for a couple of years is a Tarptent StratoSpire 2 I also have a Hilleberg Keron 3 for winter/snow. I haven't used it in a while. I've had great customer support from both outfits and they've both done repairs for me.

I love my Hilleberg Akto, my REI Halfdome and my REI Base Camp 4. These tents sleep 1, 2, and 4 people respectively. Never had issues with leakage. They do what they do very well. Just don't buy this tent:

Capacity? 1, 2, 3, person? Region? PNW? Desert southwest? Himalaya? Hawaii? Conditions? 3 season? Winter? Mountaineering? Hammocking? Trekking poles or free-standing? Double wall? Single wall? Fabric? PU coated, silnylon, cuben? Any price, weight, volume, or footprint restrictions? The "Hilleberg" response made sense because if you needed one tent, for any or unknown conditions, you would probably want one of those... I have found that for general three season, two person backpacking use in the north cascades, we really like our SMD Lunar Duo. Your results will almost definitely vary. Some more info would be helpful...

It's fine in the rain. If the rain is *really* hard, condensation on the inside of the tent mists down onto you. The mist thing has only happened once and wasn't an issue of staying dry, the fabric on my quilt did not get wet. Kind of the same thing that happens with a sil tarp if you have it pitched tight and flat. Love being able to peek out from under the beak while it rains though, that's a great feature. **edit... Yeah you can sit up in it, I'm 6' ***you can also cook under the beak while it's raining which is nice.

I like this one
Seriously though my Eureka outfitter tent is great in the rain and I think they have fixed the problem with the windows in the rainfly now too. My worst tent was an Ozark Trails tent we bought on our way to Yellowstone because I had forgotten to pack the tent. It rained the first night and it leaked. It had an awning in front that collected water and waited until someone went out the door to dump it all on their head. We took that tent back and got a Kelty tent that was garbage, the plastic clips that held the rain fly broke right away.

In my experience the coating on Eureka backpacking tent floors is marginal. Using a 1mm painters drop cloth on the inside will keep the floor from leaking. Sadly the rainflys are made from similar materials -- I got nothing for that.

The Tarptent Strato Spire 2 mentioned bt Schroder is a somewhat larger version of the Nemo Meta 2 but with a rather different geometry and more usable length. Correctly guyed out it does work well in the wind and because of the deep vestibules it is a nice tent if stuck inside in the rain. (usually at leas one side can be left open) You can get a fabric inner for it (instead of the mesh version) so that condensation does not drop on you. (the inner is water resistant) This is an over the top look , I took this shot because it is a hard shape to work out from the usual eye level photos :
however as far as lasting a life time, well you might need a waxed canvas tent for that... (hint you can buy 2 of the SS2 for the price of one of the others..) franco@tarptent
