I like to go there when the ridge is covered in snow so Patches won't cut her paws on all the garbage up there. It's a real trash heap. There are lots of starting points for that hike, you can even start down at Elk Lakes. There is some beautiful old growth at Elk Lakes.

Nice pics Eric (considering the weather), and nice TR (I appreciate the historical info)! I was up there in the spring and hiked it from the (what I thought) was the upper trail head (an ONF sign-in box was there), which is at the previous sharp bend in the road (turning from north to south as you go up the road) just prior to the final turn before the gate. For what it was, I thought it was a pretty cool trail... but I was very concerned about my vehicles tires! The road up was deeply rutted, I can't imagine its gotten any better in the last few months.

*Just say NO to Rent-Seeking, don't give up the concept of "ownership"*
