Anyone have any idea where I could find a map of DuPont, WA area from say 50 years ago? Something that might show where mad-made objects were. Ideally it would be something I could look at on-line. When I am walking the dogs or exploring the wooded areas near my house, I have come across several objects that were either buildings or something else and am curious as to what they were.

Caltopo has layers for the older topo maps. This one is 1930. DuPont Village was employee housing for the dynamite plant in 1906. There's a museum there that probably has maps. Some trivia - my 2nd cousin, once removed, was superintendent of the plant.

-> http://store.usgs.gov/ poke enough buttons and you'll figure out how to download the 7.5 topos in *.pdf format (they're in *.zip files). I found a South Tacoma topo from 1897 there several weeks ago.

Thanks it helps some. But I think the things I am looking for were after the 1940s. I know in the Hoffman Hill/Hoffman Woods area there are a couple of items I have found but that Caltopo map shows nothing in the area. There are also several buildings to the N/NE of the golf course that are just barely there. Probably related to the train that ran down to the end of the sequalitchew. As well as the foundation(?) of a building near the end of the creek just before the tunnel going under the other rail line. Anyone have any satellite images from the 50s? hockeygrin.gif Edit: Ski, I think your suggestion is working the best so far.

lol.gif Captains Nautical in Seattle used to have a good selection of old aerial photos of the state. Since that area was all military back in the 50's, I doubt they have coverage of what you're looking for. You might try county property records.

Poking around an old dynamite plant? Sounds like a movie bit.

U of W had aerial photos of the state from WWII they were declassified after the war. It was interesting to see how the Boeing plants were camouflaged.

I bought all my old aerial photos from the assessor's office over at the Pierce County Annex on 35th Street - years ago, so I don't know what availability is now. Don't drink out of those little lakes back in there if you're on JBLM land.

For aerial photos, you can also try http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ Zoom into the map and identify the area of interest. To see what's available, expand the "Aerial Imagery" group and check "Aerial Photo Single Frames".

It is the location of the British Fort Nisqually and is probably the oldest settlement in Puget Sound country. The buildings were moved to Tacoma's Point Defiance Park. I've looked for the exact DuPont site but have yet to find it. If you happen to find a map of the old forts location please post it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Nisqually
