Depend on the size of the butte. Mine doesn't fit into a lot of things.

Interesting thread. I found the same info as the OP a long while back, when thinking I could just name an unnamed feature willy nilly.
It seems that these days having the historic persons or events behind the names more accessible might be pretty cool and educational. I wonder if anyone has thought about creating map layers with this info. Seems that such a layer wouldn't bloat a map's file size that much?
Might make map-gazing-mountain-porn in the field even more fun, and enhance your snobbery when you make it back to camp.

Always thought these elevation type names are too boring!!! Its for when you wanna pretend like its unclimbed or undiscovered, or that you're taking matter-of-fact explorers' field notes that someone's actually gonna read or something... but that's not true. So it's more creative to make it interesting!! Also what if multiple peaks are all the same height! Too confusing!
I named KISW THE ROCK PEAK after the radio station

Interesting about the process for naming places through the USGS. One question I have: what actual effect does it have, even if one goes through the entire process, since the USGS does not appear to be putting out any new maps anymore?
This also reminds me of something that has bugged me for years -- the situation with river names in the Cascades. It is forking ridiculous. As in way too many "forks." They clearly got lazy naming rivers around here. It's unheard of in the Appalachians or midwest. Imagine if they named the Ohio River the "East Fork of the Mississippi"? Yeah pretty stupid. Having (for example) three different rivers flowing out of completely different glaciers and mountains all called "Nooksack River" is equally stupid, not to mention difficult to say. (Every time I saw "North Fork Sauk" I feel like I need a drink of water.) And many of the "forks" are really smaller creeks that feed into the larger river. I think there should be some kind of coordinated effort to come up with distinct names for all the "forks."

No kidding. just look at the Dosewallips River, the glacial branch that is the real source gets called Silt Creek. What dim wit did that?
