I don't recall the use of similar gridded photos in USFS lookouts I've been in. Was that a BC Forests innovation, or was it also used in other Provinces?

I believe that I vaguely recall it from that time period when I took a week long Conservation Camp on Mather Memorial Parkway at Camp Sheppard (below). Every day the FS would drive us around in a old Army bus to show us their work along the high back roads in the mountains, and at the lookouts and clearcuts. At any rate I'll find out more in Idaho this Summer and report back.. (You can actually still talk to a real Ranger in Idaho). Camp Sheppard used to be hooked-up with the Army and the Ranger Creek Airstrip. http://home.comcast.net/~kevinrudesill/camp_sheppard_history_continued.htm

It's just that in Western Washington the district forest ranger station receptionist always says that the Ranger isn't available. I've seen in Idaho where the receptionist is the Ranger. I'll ask one of the old-timers about the grid picture system.

Nice! I would have liked that job. Still would... And I love that table mounted transit! What a neat gadget.

Acquisitiveness. I've tried to avoid the custom of accumulating things one doesn't use. But I'm am attracted to elegance in design. I like the Curta calculator. The Davy lamp. And the Osbourne firefinder. I've managed to avoid them as clutter, but just.

Most Lookouts in the US had a 3 photo series done. W.B. Osborne, who came up with the fire finder and the piss bag also invented a camera that had a 120 degree arc and had transit capabilities. A series of marks representing each degree was on the photos. I have not seen these Osbornes, as they are referred to, with every 5 degrees highlighted as in the Canadian video. They are the same aid for then and now. ======= An interesting modern tool is using the precise vertical angle in addition to the degrees minutes of the fire finder. IF the lookout can see the base of the smoke the precise location of the start can be located without triangulation with another lookout. This is done by a computer working with topo map input. Something that was done occasionally by very skilled individual lookouts with experience on a specific lookout. I recall Roger on Round Mtn reporting which campsite had a fire smoking up. That sort of experience. (This was during extreme fire seasons when campfires were banned or other times when excessive smoke could have been a concern.)

The fire finder in the Canadian video is different than an Osborne FF. It looks to be quite clever in its own regard.
