With the family gone to Montana for a couple weeks, decided to take advantage of my temporary bachelorhood to get out in the mountains yesterday. Spent some weeks looking forward to this and was more than a little concerned over the not-so-auspiscious weather forecast for the weekend -- with lowered snow levels and all. Almost decided on Dungeness Spit, which, mind you, is a great way to spend a free day. But I can do that with a 3 and 5 year old anytime. So, I decided to ignore what people were saying about all the snow we were supposed to get this weekend and go for it anyway. Marmot Pass and as far up Buckhorn as I could get is what it would be.
Will probably put some photos up shortly, but here is a pano video from my highpoint on top of the false summit of Buckhorn. The weather, the time, and my hiking shoe (vs. boots) footwear deemed it best not to finish the climb. But that's what return trips are for and since I live on the Kitsap...
The autofocus on my digital SLR is a bit annoying in the video, but oh well.

Way to tough it out!
Great to see another view of the rapidly changing Olympic conditions!

Here are the pics. I forgot to mention earlier, on Penny Creek Road, I saw what appeared to be a wild turkey. Definitely a turkey, but not sure if it was wild. Are there wild turkeys roaming around the Quilcene area? Also, shortly after I started driving down, a huge black bear crossed the road in front of me. Looked like he had been doing more grazing than hibernating during the winter. Or maybe it was just a really thick fur coat?
Mount Constance from a turn out on the way to the trailhead. Will the weather hold? There are also wild turkeys on the west side of the state, especially just east of Tenino, bit I have never seen ones in the Olympics.

How's the road out there? Low-clearance car friendly?

Not that you'd want to fly low, but the first time I went there was in a Honda Civic that did just fine.

Road not an issue with the usual caveats (watch for potholes). I drove this in a Nissan Maxima many times.

Wild turkeys and random peacocks are known to roam the greater Quilcene area.
Great job on getting out!

Certainly a beautiful area up there! Run the ridge to Worthington and then drop back down to the trail sometime. It's a fun route with good challenges if you stay as close to the ridgeline as possible :-)

Surprisingly it is mostly paved. I was expecting a road similar to going to to Mowich Lake when I first went. I was pleasantly surprised.
