Years ago a poster here had mentioned that this movie was in production but I never saw the movie. This is a true story about an 1845 wagon train in eastern Oregon that becomes lost. http://www.hulu.com/watch/622165

Oh Pilot of the storm who leaves no trace Like thoughts inside a dream Heed the path that led me to that place Yellow desert stream.

The movie is a fictionalized account that bears little resemblance to the real event. The movie is dull and boring. The actual history is well worth reading about. Not a small wagon train as depicted in the movie. Good books: "The Brazen Overlanders of 1845", Wojcik, Donna M. "Terrible Trail: The Meek Cutoff, 1845 ", Clark, Keith; Tiller, Lowell Recent exploration of the route by a friend of ours: "The Meek Cutoff: Tracing the Oregon Trail's Lost Wagon Train of 1845", Brooks Ragan New book which I haven't read: "Wood, Water & Grass: Meek Cutoff of 1845"

I fell asleep. Stephen Meek and his brother, Joseph were original Mountain Men who had a healthy respect (fear) for some of the Indian Tribes such as the Cayuse/Umatilla while at the same time marrying into the Nez Perc tribe (Joe). The crusty movie depiction of Steven Meek is just that - a depiction. Probably more truth than fiction. In his own words. http://mtmen.org/mtman/html/smeek.html

http://www.tomlaidlaw.com/clickable/corral.html "This day we traveled twelve miles. Four miles down the valley brought us to the Umatilla Agency. Here the road forks, the right hand one leading to the columbia, at the mouth of the Umatilla, the left hand one leading to the wells springs. Our company took the wells springs road and crossed a dry, sandy desert to Butter creek." Above - this reference I believe is the Naches Cutoff to Puget Sound country via Naches Pass - below.
