My doc just told me that melatonin has a short half-life in the body, so if you awake way too early, as I often do, you might try taking 1 melatonin at bedtime and have another handy at the bedside to take if you awaken in the middle of the night. He also suggested falling asleep without Ambien, and taking 1/2 (or even less) if I awake in the middle of the night.
