Went up into the Blue Mountains yesterday for a nice 7 mile round trip hike. Tonight had a meal from what we gathered. Morel/bacon, homemade pasta carbonara. Steamed nettles with morels. A nice crisp miners lettuce salad. Don't see why you couldn't have this on a backpack as a fresh meal. (No fresh homemade pasta though. Have to go dehydrated....

That sounds great. I love living off the fat of the land while in the backcountry. Last year I stumbled upon some morels on my way to a backcountry camp in the N. Cascades. They made a nice addition to the cutthroat I caught for dinner that night.

I'll second the motion! Fresh morels and trout in North Idaho this past weekend! Can't beat that, even with a big stick.

Nature exists with a stark indifference to humans' situation.

Sounds great, but are morels a "meal"? From what I've been able to find, mushrooms contain few calories.

Yes, Morels are not a meal in themselves unless you eat a lot of them. We use them to enhance other main courses or use as a side dish. They help enhance a lot of dishes, and you get to think about where you got them, when you finally devour them for dinner! Slightly marinated, then grilled are quite nice also. Grilled morels and rainbows are a favorite of mine.
