Rate for stupidity: dying in a stunt at 73, or dying in a nursing home at 83?

Some people have better things to do with their lives than walking the dog. Some don't.

Umm... According to the story he set his parachute on fire. This isn't about living life to the fullest. It's stoopiditee to the fullest.

Ya got me there. But he didn't intend to die (at least I don't think so.) Base jumping is risky enough but to light your parachute on fire in hopes you have enough time to switch to your other chute? Taking risk to a whole different level. At least he went out quick. No lying around dying in a hospital bed.

What did people think about "basic" base jumping when it first started. Its about progression correct...In 5 yrs, lighting your shoot on fire will be passe

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. RIP James.

James was a retired accountant, had participated in 1000 jumps over the past decade, and performed the stunt before, albeit skydiving, presumably with more time to deploy the second chute. http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/05/20/us-usa-accident-idaho-idUSKBN0O50UW20150520

Performed the lighting the chute on fire stunt before? 500 feet is no where high enough to practice it.

Yes, he had done it before if you read that article. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm not sure what height he would have needed. If he had done it from 1000' and died I suspect the commentary wouldn't change.

Don't know what terminal velocity for a burning chute is, but I bet it is speedy. agree.gif
