Forget Mailbox Peak. Switch to Putrid Pete's Peak. The WTA will never "improve" that wretched trail.

DHM is nowhere near that funny. I think that AH's writing style is similar to Damian's daughter what's her name? Or maybe it's actually Damian?

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.

I'm surprised the trail doesn't come with complimentary security...

Just what we need on our trails, citing owners of loose dogs, and raising revenue for trail maintenance!

You can follow his Flickr site here, like me: https://www.flickr.com/photos/11425550@N02/ It's his TR's that are priceless! Just be sure you don't have a mouthful when reading them! Now, if only he produced more TR's! As he ages, it seems that the gaps between TR's lengthens....

It's the trailhead that needs security... If TAH were to publish a manifesto, I would be first in line to buy it.

Come, gather round my hiking friends and let me tell you a tale…a tale of wonder, amazement, and an accomplishment so rare it was like witnessing a leprechaun riding a unicorn over a rainbow to check on his pot of gold. The time I hiked Mailbox Peak in complete solitude in prime weather! It was a Tuesday almost a year ago (before trail friendly was christened). I was training for Rainier, and part of my conditioning were midweek hikes up Mailbox after work. Generally I’d encounter 10-15 other hardy souls out there for an evening stroll, but on this day I arrived around 6pm to an empty parking lot. It was a warm day by Seattle standards (mid-80s in the city), but the sky was blue, the sun was out, and I had ice cold water and a can of Fremont Interurban IPA in my pack (for a summit celebration). As I set out, the silence was deafening…I didn’t even hear the dull roar of I-90! Upon reaching the steep section, my pace slowed, but I was determined to not stop until I hit the summit. Once in a while, I would look over my shoulder, or look back at each of the few switchbacks on the old trail to see if anyone was approaching. None ever did. I arrived at the summit 1.5hrs after leaving the car having not seen another soul…I used the 360-degree view up there to check for signs of the apocalypse. None were found. I sat on the summit like a king; sipping my IPA, eating my Reese’s Pieces (an odd mix), and relishing a beautiful sunset. After about 15min on the summit I started my hike down. In retrospect, I should have enjoyed the unique experience longer, but I usually did like to get through the higher section with some light left. I will definitely meet someone coming up, right? Maybe someone keen on night photography, or someone who just wanted to avoid the heat of the evening? Nope! I arrived at the car 2hr and 55min after beginning my trek (still my fastest car-to-car time on Mailbox), and smiled to myself. “Did I really do Mailbox without seeing anyone?” I pinched myself; I was not dreaming. “I may never experience again.” Thus far the words have rung true. I have hiked it since in the rain, the snow, the wind, and have always encountered others, but I will always have memories of that hot day in June of 2014 where Mailbox was all mine smile.gif Sorry for the novel y’all, but it was a story that needed to be told!

Indeed it was, and thanks for telling it! Now we can all dream the impossible dream. . .a solo hike of Mailbox with no other human encounters up.gif

And many of us still miss The Angry Hiker--and wonder where he is now: disparaging new golf courses? Bob made Trail Talk SO popular!

Revived a 3 year old thread for that.

I may not be the smartest, I may not be the strongest, but I don't want to be. I only want to be the best I can be.
