The weekend beckoned for another backpacking trip. Tanks Lakes were on my list for quite a while. I originally pushed it off for a three day weekend with the idea that it would be good to have a day to chill by the lakes and explore the area l, but there are way too many trips like that on my list, many more than there will be three day weekends in next 5 years and with the shorter drive it seemed manageable for 2 days.

The trail was lined with wildflowers all the way to the second river crossing. Among them were some stinging nettles, growing mostly at a section that was little overgrown The did not let us escape unscathed. Snow free all the way to Opal Lake, no real challenges other than a steep trail. From Opal Lake the route was well cairned over the boulder field. Snow started about half mile before we hit the lake. There was a decent amount but not enough for snowshoes. Conditions were good and we did not need traction but the snow is still reaching down into the steeper gully and traction might be necessary on colder days when the snow might have a chance to firm up.

Camped at Lower Lake. It just started to melt out and it was beautiful.

Very nice! I finally got up there last year, post-Labor Day weekend. Cool to see the area with some snow.

Great to see how that area is melting out this year. I'll be in the area (Chetwood) in a month. Did you happen to get a zoom shot on Overcoat Peak?

I didn't take many zoomed in pics. I'll scan my file later tonight and if I find anything, I'll post it here.

We've done Tanks Lakes twice over the past few years and always in early July. In 2010 we had a little more snow than 2013, which made it ezier to climb, but still this looks pretty much like it was. Exactly 1 month ahead.
