I've been eating Mountain House freeze dried food for years, works fine for me. A number of flavors I like. I can OD on them pretty quick if I'm spending a lot of time backpacking, but here and there they go down easy. The last time I was stocking up at REI, right next to them was Alpine Aire dinners. Some intriguing sounding flavors. Decided to grab a couple of those too just for something different. On my last trip I had their Thai chicken with noodles. It was good. Seemed way more flavorful than Mountain House. The chicken actually resembled chicken. It had a bunch of cilantro in it that really made it pop. Hoping their other stuff is as good.
The other thing one can do is buy the MH freeze dried ingredients in #10 cans and combine them with your own spices to create your own recipes. This can be cost effective as well -- as many ingredients like instant rice, powdered potatoes, etc may be gotten cheaper elsewhere.
Packed in quart freezer bags such meals will last for long enough for a long backpacking trip -- just not the years of the factory sealed foil packs.
