The first example is of someone who simply got lucky. The storms and her knee thing started after she had already decided to quit over not bringing a patch kit for her pad. At least that is the way the story reads.

I always bring a full on repair kit - must weigh eight ounces. That must be why I'm always getting in trouble - I fix it & move on.
