I worked on the Quilcene District during the summers of 1954 and 55. I believe the building that is missing was the residence of the assistant ranger. His name was Les Larson. The tower was standing then. I thought it was a water tank, but I'm not sure about that. I do think they hung fire hose from it to dry, but since we never had any fires the summers I was there, I never saw it in use. The house with the red door was the original ranger station. During my 1st summer, I spent some of my weekends working the desk, taking weather and phoning it in to some fire weather location. A long time ago so don't remember details. I do remember taking temperature, relative humidity, wind, and weighing sticks to get the fuel moisture content. My first summer our crew quarters were an old CCC camp on what I think was Penny Creek Road. The 2nd summer they refurbished a horse barn near the station. We all slept in what was the hay loft. Just a big open space. I continue to be in contact with a buddy living up in Ferndale. He and I worked at Quil the same time. He was the guard down at Corregenda on the Dose. I will contact him to see if he has some more details. I have a fuzzy slide taken of the old ranger station, but don't know how to post. Hope this helps.
