I think these kinds of analyses are fascinating. And clever. And obviously computers can do pattern finding on a scale that people would never dream of a couple generations ago. But I'm also pretty skeptical. This was done by assigning words either a positive or negative emotional value, then plotting the arc, and matching it to broad patterns across all 1,700 stories. The problem is that words change their connotation drastically with context. Bad can be bad, like "bad dog," or it can be good, like "bad ass!" And modern software isn't smart enough to understand context. Hell, a lot of people can't detect sarcasm in printed text online.
