Interesting story of how a private citizen effected change, at least at the state level. The proposed name change seems more than reasonable. There must be more to the story. The Federal government is generally the leader in advancing equal rights so this seems strange. The article ultimately fails in that it leaves obvious questions unanswered.

So the issue is not just the current/former name, but also the proposed future name. The State rejected a compromise offer.

Here is some local history per the name. This location is now Yings take-out in Seattle. I post this for some of you who may not understand what this fuss is about. http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=9191

Loved the linked article about the restaurant. Amazing look at our city history. I loved the Peking House which occupied this property in the 80s. Now I know the rest of the story. I know the area north of the canal had housing covenants and even rules about people of color being on the street after dark. The renaming of the lake is great and it would be an excellent way of defining the diverse character of our state history. So many interesting stories so lost on many modern day citizens

I find Cracker Lake in GNP very offensive. Cracker Barrel too.
