It worked for me. Thanks for posting. Best visualization of Everest that I've ever experienced.

A flyover up the Khumbu Icefall route to the summit of Mt. Everest using 3-D simulation. That coupled with the elevation guide makes it clear how high you are up there and how small a person would be. Whoa. The site also has more information on the avalanche that occurred in April, 2014. That is very interesting, bobbi. Thanks for posting. ~z

Now I don't have to climb Everest. Wish they had a similar site for K2, Kachenjunga, Gasherbrum, Makalu, Annapurna, etc.

Amazing animation. Bummer that Nepal has been so beset by tragedy these last few years. I just read the Outside article about the destruction of Langtang. Horrifying and depressing, but worth reading... the Nepalese still need, and deserve all the help they can get. Also, Everest will remain unclimbed this year (for the first time since 1974). The single permitted attempt by Nobukazu Kuriki was not successful due to poor conditions.

i've been to Everest Base Camp and Kala Pathar. our permit was good only to the 18,000-19,000 ft. level. KP is at 18000+ so, would have been cool to go further up EBC, but ... anyway, yep, there's no way in $%#@ i would even think of doing a summit bid, so this link was perfect to 'experience the trek to the summit' up.gif to all those who successfully made the summit and returned home safe and sound borank.gif contour5 : thanks for the link from Outside magazine. will check it out later. my understanding is that permits for future climbs will not be given to inexperience climbers, young and old (over 65yo, maybe under 18 yo), disabled, etc... the mountains will let you in or keep you out as she %#@& well pleases!

I had dinner with a Nepali a couple of nights ago. He lives most of the year in Katmandu and during the monsoon lives in Seattle. He said that trekking is down around 90% since the earthquake. On the positive side he said incomes in the past decade have risen from just a couple of thousand per couple to around 6-7000/year. With a low cost of living, life for many, is getting better. The Nepali people are generally wonderful folks.

a friend left yesterday for Nepal ... she's been sponsoring a girl for almost 10 years and really wants to bring her back to the US. the 'red tape' is so much thicker! she is a physician's assistant and brought with her lots of medical supplies! apparently there's still lots of medical work to be done due to the earthquake. a week ago, India was blocking fuel transportation into Nepal. hhhmmm Climbing is such a big financial boost to Nepal's economy. sending lots of good karma their way. namaste!

Actually the blockade is being conducted by southern Nepali ethnic groups who feel that they are being marginalized by the new constitution. India has made some effort to try to defuse the tension, but it seems a long way from being solved.

thanks for the clarification ... it's the info my friend got from the Nepali family. apparently at the time of the fuel blockage, the school where the sponsored girl attends & lives in, closed because without fuel, they couldn't have classes or cook. so the girl's father had to come and take her back to their village. unsure if all is well and school is operational.

Is the north side of Mt. Everest closed?
