10/21/15

I had never been to Sunrise.  The area around Rainier is loaded with small bumps on volcanic ridges characteristically similar to one another.  A few peaks have real prominence or impressive craggy tops, but most named points don't really cut the mustard.  I wanted to check it out despite all that.

I was slightly surprised when Fletcher, Dustin, and Heather were all interested in joining me after I pitched the 12 peaklet idea.  Fletcher had already done a few of the peaklets around Sunrise before.  Since he had done Dege I suggested he drop us off at Sunrise Point, park at Sunrise and meet us on the summit of Antler.

From Antler we all continued over to McNeeley which was slightly brushy and then we also did the southwest point of McNeeley on the way back.  We then contoured around the south side of Frozen Lake and then went directly up to the southeast peak of Fremont.  This had some loose exposed class 3.  Caution was necessary.

We followed the ridge over the main peak of Fremont and then turned north dropping down around a craggy ridge and back up to the crest before coming to the north peak.  We didn't stop there but continued down to the lookout for a break.

After the break we took the trail back to Frozen Lake and followed the Wonderland trail over to Skyscraper.  A spur trail provided easy access to the top of Skyscraper.  From there we went cross-country to Burroughs Mountain following a faint track along the ridge.

I was tired now and Dustin and Fletcher pulled ahead.  I had to stop for low blood sugar and eat a snack.  Heather and I caught up to the guys on the summit.  It was really neat to look down at the terminus of the Winthrop Glacier from Burroughs and then the terminus of the Emmons Glacier from Second Burroughs.

The lenticular which covered Rainier half-way through the day was now looking more ominous and clouds from the valley were rising to engulf us.  By the time we reached First Burroughs we were in a white-out.  On the way home we stopped in Federal Way for much earned Chipotle burritos.

Nice  up.gif You're energetic to cover that much ground, especially on some of our infamous shattered volcanic rock!   paranoid.gif The barren landscape particularly on Burroughs looks as if it is pausing, just waiting for the first  serious storm.

This was another fun trip!  Yes, no remarkable peaks, but it was a really fun loop trip in my opinion.  Also, five of those peaks are 300+ prominence, so I definitely count those.

Here are just a few decent pictures I was able to grab:
