Winter has arrived in the Teanaway... a trace of snow at 4800 feet... a couple inches by 5000 feet... increasing to 9-12 inches at 6200 feet... and a bit more on our two summits (6779' and 6510'). We started at the Iron Peak Trailhead (3960')... followed the trail and steps in the snow to the Iron/Teanaway saddle (6200')... where we began an upwardly biased traverse underneath the cliffy area on the SE side of Teanaway Peak... as we worked our way over to Teanaway's east ridge (~6400')... then took a fairly direct line up to the summit (6779'). From the Teanaway Peak summit we traced our steps back to the Iron/Teanaway saddle and then made the half-mile ridge walk to the Iron Peak summit (6510')... then traced our steps back to the saddle... where we chased darkness back to the car. 7.2 miles roundtrip, gaining 3227 feet of elevation. We never did use our snowshoes... and chose to store them at the Iron/Teanaway saddle while we did the two summits. We used micro-spikes for the last 20 feet of elevation to the Teanaway Peak summit and then kept them on for the rest of the day until until we got back to the dirt at 4800 feet. Sunshine teased us for most of the day... with an interesting set of clouds that seemed to run directly from Mt. Stuart down to Mt. Rainier. Yes, it made for some really dramatic photography... however, I would have gladly traded the photo ops for the sunshine. Photos, trailhead directions and downloadable GPS track for our trip to Teanaway Peak and Iron Peak. ..

"Teanaway 70" Peaks List... a guide to hiking and scrambling in the Teanaway Area. ----------------

Good late season double summit trip. The ridge travel to Iron is great fun. Teanaway Peak aka Gene's Peak (Gene Prater)

Yes, Big Steve! We talked about him, and when I got home I pulled out a circa 1975 edition of his book Snow Trails. Still good beta in there, and Pargeter maps too! up.gif Roger has a slightly older version in black and white. lol.gif

Nice. We tried to do Bill's Peak the other day and quit when we got to the boulder field covered in nearly 2 feet of fluffy snow. It was an ankle eater waiting to happen but what a beautiful day in the hills!

Mtngirl: our original destination was Bill's peak- but we worried the stream would be quite high after all the rain so switched to Iron/Teanaway instead. We had our share of boulders under non-consolidated snow as well! agree.gif

You got great contrast in your shots of the Stuart range with that early snow.
