A "what would you do?" inquiry:
I have off work from December 18 - January 3. I have the following (somewhat) firm commitments and am toying with the idea of staying in the SW for the entire period but need suggestions as to where to go. Primary interests would be hiking (day hikes) and photography. Sleeping in the car is perfectly acceptable. Snow is fine as well but mind that I'll be solo.
My only commitments:
December 18 - Sacramento, CA
December 24/25 - Las Vegas, NV
December 26/27 - Los Angeles, CA
That logically leaves the periods from the 19th-24th and 27th-3rd. Whether or not I take my own car or rent a car is TBD.
Where would you go in those periods? Understanding that day-to-day plans will be weather dependent, what general areas/parks would be worthwhile? Any must-do hikes?
Thanks in advance!
Matt

I second the recommendation for Red Rocks. Several days worth of great hiking only 30 min. drive from the strip. Get the Red Rock Canyon Green Trails map. Note many of the higher elevation trips near LV could be difficult or impossible to reach in winter and/or require high clearance 4wd/awd to access.
DO NOT MISS visiting the Valley of Fire. About an easy hour's drive north of LV. Check out John Morrow's recent tr.
I found this site useful: LasVegas local hikes. And this hiking guide, which includes all the major hiking areas near LV: LasVegas & Southern Nevada
