It looks like Saturday is going to be beautiful, and with limited snow on Christmas day hopefully less of a mess with pass closures. With the extremely deep snow, I'm looking to join/assemble a group of at least 3 people to go plow some snow. Based on my last trip and reports I've seen, I don't think we would get very far with just 2!
Avalanche risk will likely still be considerable around and above the treeline, so it will need to be something relatively conservative. I'm not going to venture into avalanche terrain in the current conditions.
I'm happy to join people on their existing plans, but I have a couple of ideas myself if necessary.
Some info:
- Must love dog. I can't go to National Parks.
- If the approach does not involve tricky route finding, then I'm fine with walking in the dark if that is necessary to get where we want.
- No problems with something strenuous. I'm looking for partners because going alone is impossible (except on popular packed trails, which I'm not super interested in). You can find my old trip reports here on the website if you wanna check if I'm capable of your type of adventure.
- Gear: I have an ice axe (which is probably useless right now), and an InReach, but no avalanche gear like a beacon. If you expect your partners to have that, I can't join.

Nice timing! I was also about to post for a Saturday partner(s). I'm interested, but also have dogs- a 7 year old female husky pit and an almost 11 month old intact husky male. I was contemplating Arrowhead, but am open to other ideas. We're in the same boat re: gear- can travel in winter with spikes, shoes, or pons, but not yet any avy gear.
Cheers!

The 26th is looking like an awesome day for some snowshoeing. Where are you thinking of heading?

I can't join but I did notice that a group from Everett Mountaineers is planning a scramble of Arrowhead tomorrow Dec 25 if they get enough participants. That means you wouldn't have to break trail on Saturday.

RichP: ah, too bad, I was hoping you would be interested also. That Mountaineers event is great news though I love Mountaineers snowshoeing trips on the day before I go .
BlameTheDogz / nickmtn : I was originally thinking about Oakes, Union/Jove or McCausland, but I like the Arrowheads idea. I assume you're thinking about the east ridge? The west approach looks a bit too risky for me in the current conditions. I hope the Mountaineers would take the east ridge as well. I've read earlier reports of them taking that route, so it is likely.
I was originally afraid that 2 or 3 would not be enough (I expect at a minimum knee-deep snow, probably regularly waist-deep), but if the Mounties pave the trail, we should be okay.
I'll PM you about the dogs, it might be possible to briefly meetup to see if they get along ... Liesl (my dog, female, ~8 years) is usually okay with other dogs, but can get scared if they're too enthusiastic.

Just wondering, it says:
Quote: | Availability: 5 (6 capacity) |
Are those numbers usually accurate? That would mean the trip is not happening?

Hey out there! Things are coming together, but given current conditions, the more the merrier so please join our team if you want greater success on this beautiful Saturday to summit something (likely Arrowhead).
Happy howlidays!

Unfortunately we had to cancel our plans due to lack of partners. It was only BlameTheDogz and me, and it's pretty clear that that will not be enough to reach the destination. So do not expect a packed trail to Arrowhead after tomorrow ...
Might try again sometime next week ... If you're already thinking about something and could use partners, please send me a PM.
