...for a 3 week test of MRE meals hungry.gif

Touron is a nougat of Arabic origin made with almonds and honey or sugar, without which it would just not be Christmas in Spain.

This sounds like a bad deployment... The stomach of steel wouldnt be the issue... you'd need a toilet of steel though.

A buddy of mine's father served in France during WWI -- at one low point in the uglieness of trench warfare the only rations his outfit had for several months was a canned meat product resembling SPAM (SPAM was introduced in 1937) MREs seem like a breeze compared to that.

As the saying goes, "an arm lives on its belly." Food improvements, I'm sure, would always be welcome. Although, what if the food improved so much that... "Sir, they are shelling us." "Darn the torpedos! Wait 'till I finish my chicken phad thai!"

MRE' are a lot better than 1954 c-rats. Eaten in 1977.

As a result of this thread I busted out and tested my 1985 MRE's! All edible but not very fun. The bread products were the worst. Oh yeah one of four tabascos had dried up. Rule of thumb? Salt and sugar are preservatives! Without those two ingredients, the multi syllable chemicals just don't get it done. As a result of this test, I feel that any MRE's newer than 1990 would be okay.

Other nation's milatary's have adopted the basic sealed retort food preservation system MRE's are based on. Has anyone tried them? Better?
