Interesting. I was initially confused as to what was being represented on the map. Actually I'm still confused. So; this is a years worth of gps tracks uploaded by strava users?

It's the difference between years, move the map around.

Hmmm....one has to love when looking at the bike tracks how arrogant they are to flaunt their poaching of hiker only trails.
Lots of evidence of poaching on Tiger Mountain. Also the PCT south of Snoqualmie.

FWIW, I know at least a few people that track runs with Strava that don't bother toggling the track between run and bike. Their runs show up as bike rides on Strava.
The heat map would also have you believe that lots of folks are riding bikes up to Camp Muir...

I got that it was a comparison between years. It was the title- "Heat Map" that threw me. I sort of expected maybe infrared satellite data showing population growth or movement of warm bodies/machinery/automobiles/whatever. Actually had to drill down into the website for a while to figure out what it was really portraying...

I liked how loop around Crater jumps out, even a small scale.

Once you figure it out, it's pretty neat, isn't it?

Those are hikers and skiers.
A lot of people use a GPS bike computer as a speedometer, mileage tracker, for navigation, and other things. Plenty of them just re-use the GPS they have instead of buying a second one for hiking. But when you upload data from a bike-specific GPS, the server tags it as a bike ride, whether that's what it actually was or not. Most people don't bother changing the activity type on record.
