Not really a joke but a title worn proudly who know what it means.
I'm Hikertrash. In fact, I was sittin' at that same location much of July 19, 2006, not yet halfway through my thru hike.
Get some Hikertrash gear from a fellow PCT thru hiker (and triple crown holder) She Ra.

In her words....what is hiker trash:
Quote: | Hikertrash. After months on the trail we are often mistaken for homeless.
It might be the smell, the incredibly long and scraggly beards,
or maybe the way we attack a buffet. Who knows. But Hikertrash is like porn: hard to define, but you know it when you see it. |

That's a fun backstory, TC. In the big scheme of things we are all just Hikertrash and not so elite..

Times have changed.
Not many there when I passed through in 2002.
You know trash when you smell it.
I remember seeing as sign somewhere in some town, saying no doing laundry or doing dishes in bathroom sink. It's hard to resist, especially rinsing out socks!

I hear ya Brucester. It wasn't that busy in '06, but was pretty busy as there was a gal whose B-Day was the 19th, so for the preceding couple of weeks, her friends arranged it to get there on the 18th-19th to celebrate with her.
Even in the 2002-2006 time frame, numbers increased quite a bit. The herds I hear about now (and even before the book / movie came out)....my goodness. 50 people leaving the border a day for weeks on end - yeah, (50 in a day) that was kickoff weekend back in '06. If you got more than 3 days either side of it, perhaps 5-10 a day.
I started 3 days before KO in '06 and had 2 other people in the car with me. Given who we ran into on the trail the next couple of days it seemed like there was at most, 5-10 who left the same day we did.
Even up here in thru hiker season, it's a steady stream coming through.

Hiker trash! I spent the night in the backyard of the Moose Creek Inn in 2012. Had to skip up to Chester the next day due to the Belden fire. Went back and did that part in 2013.
I really enjoyed the hospitality of the people of Sierra City. Had a gal buy my beer at the bar in the tavern there even though I was hiker trash!
