If any laws need to be passed so that people can be "sent a bill", it should be for car drivers that cause accidents that tie up traffic for thousands of people. Every person affected should be able to get compensation from the morons involved. That would address a problem a million times larger than base jumpers ending up in trees. Did I say "million"? I meant billion. |
If car insurance was required to cover the consequential damages to all the affected commuters wasted time by causing a collision and traffic tie up -- driving a car would be so expensive that most folks would need to live withing the walk zone or ride the bus/subway.

False. You would be many, many times more likely to receive money than to have to pay it. I would have been paid many times, and never had to pay a penny. People can already cause massive damage in an auto accident, yet insurance is not a deal breaker for car ownership, compared to the other costs involved. And it would be a huge incentive to not drive like a moron and harm thousands of other people. It is a sad truth that people worry more about a few dollars they may have to pay than they do the lives of other people they might kill or maim. And If by "privileged few", you mean sane people who drive within the law and within basic safety standards, then yes, let's get the drunks, morons and texters off the roads. Once someone has caused a few major traffic tie-ups, they will find insurance hard to get, and they should be walking or taking the bus.
Anyway, the post was meant to show the absurdity of making the base jumper pay, it was not meant as a practical suggestion to be enacted.

That logic could be extended. |
To the next person who goes out in the ocean in a small boat, or flies a small plane, or climbs a small mountain....... |
I suppose I should have prefaced my statement with "Careful". Extending the logic was my worry, not my wish...

I wonder if it was the same jumper I saw at Barclay Lake a couple years ago. It was my friend's first time camping and he was hoping it was an alien ha-ha. Turned out to be a guy in a wingsuit.

The country of Australia has strict rules for anyone (including Americans) sailing sailboats inside of their waters. You'll be needing all of the normal ocean safety gear if you wish to dock at an Australian port. Otherwise, sail on to Pango Pango...
The US Coast Guard can pull my boat over at any time for a "safety" check. They have.

I don't think so -- I think it would work more like many current class action lawsuits -- where the law firm that handles the case collects substantial fees -- and the negatively affected consumers get coupons for a discount on their next purchase. Epson Class Action Settlement
So Dewey, Cheatem & Howe might make a bundle -- but not the typical motorist

That plus the fact that mandatory auto insurance would then be paying out a LOT for a whole new class of claims, with at least some degree of the risk being spread out across all payers.

I understood what you meant as most here certainly did. I was just extending what you said to other examples.
