That's quite interesting, Steve. Is there any forensic archeological evidence that addresses how long these migrations have been occurring. It's clear that much of NA was covered by ice in the not too distant past. I would imagine the birds that go to high north latitudes have just moved north as they've been able to do so and as climatic conditions have changed (evolved).

Super cool. Confirms something I already sort of knew: Western Mexico is crazy with birds in late winter and spring.

Those are the Black Turnstone and the Golden-crowned Sparrow.

RayD, the Golden-Crown Sparrow makes sense, but both dots seem too far inland for Black Turnstone.

Here's the key to species: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/mesmerizing-migration-map-which-species-is-which/ Black Turnstone is correct according to this key. The actual locations of the dots are not too accurate - there is some kind of geographical averaging and smoothing going on with the ebird data (you can look up Black Turnstone observations on eBird and you'll find that there are not actually observations of them off-shore as is shown in this animation: http://ebird.org/ebird/map/blktur?neg=true&env.minX=&env.minY=&env.maxX=&env.maxY=&zh=false&gp=false&ev=Z&mr=1-12&bmo=1&emo=12&yr=all&byr=1900&eyr=2016)
