So you think you are tough? 130 miles 60,000 feet elevation gain(and loss) under 60 hours. 70% is "off-trail". Only $1.60 entrance fee, and zero prizes to weight you down on the trip home. The excellent documentary on Netflix "The Barkley marathons" is as close as I will ever get to doing it. Most people don't even finish the short "fun run" three laps. Only a dozen or so have finished the entire 5 laps during its 25 year history. OK, the testosterone fueled, compulsive set can jump in now and say its no big deal, because last summer......... biggrin.gif I enjoyed the movie. No urge to do a single lap. agree.gif

Fun movie! We watched while recovering from my 86th ultramarathon finish smile.gif PNW notes: Two WA ultra veterans -- Tim and Lisa from E-burg -- appear in the movie but were not interviewed nor identified. Ted "Cave Dog" Keizer from Coos Bay became the 4th finisher in 2003 and holds the race record. B-ham's PCT record holder Anish (Heather) finished one lap in 2014, two laps in 2015. Bev and Alan Abbs from CA have run a bunch of PNW ultras. RD "Lazurus Lake" is Gary Cantrell. The director did a great job capturing his quirky personality.

I have the itch to try a lap. I applied years ago with the intention to do a single lap, maybe a second. Didn't get picked. That was back when I was running 5 or 6 ultras a year, finishing in the middle of the pack or a bit better. I had no illusions that I might finish the fun run. I know a couple dozen people who got into Barkley and ran at least one lap. All of them are experienced ultrarunners, most with multiple finishes in 100 mile races, very tough and strong (physically and mentally) people. Fun to talk to them about their Barkley experiences. One of them, who was in the first party to do the PCT from Stevens Pass to Snoqualmie Pass in <24 hours, quit halfway into lap 2.

I like the way they seed it with one guy that is in reasonably good shape and a decent runner, but is obviously way over his head. Then they see how long he goes before he gets "taps". I think the Walking Dead in the filmed race made it about 6 miles or something. This race slaps down the most hardened ultr runners. But there never seems to be a shortage of entrants. It is whatever comes after "brutal" in the scale of difficulty. I like his philosophy for the low entry fee. " I don't charge much, so they can't complain to me much". agree.gif

I've always wondered if there is any truth to the rumor that the idea of this race was inspired by James Earl Ray escaping the prison (that is now part of the Marathons) and only making it 8 miles after 55 hours on the run.

That is discussed extensively in the movie. The race actually goes under that prison.

Steve you should run the Alaska Mountain Wilderness Classic; think Barkley without all the creature comforts, no tedious loops, and apex predators around every corner. biggrin.gif

If you show fear, a monkey will bully you.

Yeah right lol.gif I've heard the AMWR is tough, but it aint no Barkley, which has a <1% finish rate. Most years nobody has finished.

2016 event complete. Jared Campbell completed all 5 laps for a record third time. Gary Robbins completed 4-1/2 laps, missed a book and got lost for 2-1/2 hours, resulting in a timing out. Gary's wife attributes Gary's problems the result of sleep deprivation and promises she will "train him better next time."
