Gary is indeed a beast, it sounds like his hallucinations got pretty bad, amazing what sleep deprivation can do!
I believe this was posted at the time but Gary was the same person that set the new Fastest Known Time on the Wonderland. If you haven't seen the video it's worth a watch.

Actually, he also went in the wrong direction on the last loop and was short two miles, so the six second thing isn't all that relevant.

Where did you read that? Per Barkley rules, each runner starting the final (5th loop) is required go the opposite direction of the previous runner. Gary started the 5th loop the proper direction (i.e., opposite direction that John Kelly took). Gary successfully got to each of the books in the proper order. With 2 miles to go he got off route in the fog after the last book, missed a turn and touched the finishing gate from the wrong direction.

So we are in agreement - he did not complete the last two miles of the race course as per the rules.
His finish sounds exciting and difficult as hell, but not on the race course.

I'm tough enough to read about this marathon. I would also be tough enough to watch the video, if I could get a hold of it.

Amazing job by John Kelly to finish this sucker! First new finisher in several years. Way to go!
I'm glad to see that Gary didn't actually finish the course correctly. Otherwise, had he been just SIX SECONDS over time... well that would have been a brutal pill to swallow. Still a tremendous effort. I can't believe people can actually do something like that.
