The closed part of the Mt Loop is a very fun bike ride. Like when the North Cascades Highway is closed but mostly plowed on, it is extra nice biking a good road with no traffic. For the Mt Loop, the gravel part probably needs somewhat wider tires. I have been on most of it, and the windfall is not a problem. This may be the last weekend such an option is available. Start at either the gate near Deer Creek coming from Granite Falls, or the gate near Bedal Creek coming from Darrington. There will be a couple of spots with rocks and gravel, but not bad to walk past.

When you are "miles from nowhere" you must have finally arrived at somewhere.

Nice! I have always been interested in things like this. How long do you think this section is? 15 miles? Also, do you know of any other closed road bikes nearby, other than this and North Cascades? Have you ever ridden 410/123 east of Rainier? Thanks!

There is about 7 miles of paved and 6 miles of gravel. I once rode the Rainier West Side Road, I think it is called, but don't remember details except seeing lots of goats and having a fun hike from the same road. Several gravel roads in the Darrington area would be good, but they are not closed. Traffic is minimal though.

George....do you ever go up to the gate at Ross Dam and then ride up the NCH as far as you want? I always thought it would be a lovely traffic free ride before the highway opens..... ( Hello to Bridget....) cool.gif

Westside Rd near Rainier was in great shape when we rode it last August, few potholes, nice grade for the 8 miles in we went.
