The name was Artic, incorrectly spelled, whether on purpose or not,
The strange spelling is attributed to bad penmanship. The community was to be named Arta, after Arta Saunders, one of the community's founders. A hand-written application for a Post Office was filed in the 1880's. Someone in Washington, DC read the final "a" as "ic" and the error became fact.
