While it doesn't seem to get too many early season ascents (except maybe on skis?), the route looked like it didn't have any terrain that would be too limiting if conditions were good. This route does go through the 2014 Chiwaukum fire, however the trail is in surprisingly good shape and easy to follow, considering. Solid snow started around 5300' and was good all morning, giving way to mashed potatoes by 2pm.
All photos and some route notes on my blog.

Been wanting to do a weekender in that area once the snow melts. Thanks for the TR, the aftermath of the fire doesn't look *too* bad.

Well, according to the map I looked at while planning it only shows the lower portion as being closed to public entry. See here. However, the sign at the road says closed to all entry. We discussed the "public safety" closure aspect and decided to continue on our trip based on the day's conditions (low freezing level overnight, no wind, etc.). They did some work on the road last fall but there were some small washouts from this winter. No washouts on the trail, however, and no evidence of major erosion on the trail bed (some obviously, but there are worse erosion/washout examples on well maintained trails I've recently been on). Also, not many of the burned trees have fallen yet. Makes for easy travel now, but maybe some big storms could change that quickly.

Another of your good Spring TRs!
Luke, did the soul skier (Richard) say that the few turns made carrying the skis worth it?
Wow, if the ladybugs are all over the summit this early, I have a hunch it might be a big year for other types of bugs, the biting kind, too.

Good Stuff as usual working man. We had decent snow conditions so I thought you would. I think I saw you from Stormy. The South ridge you went up looks pretty pathetic since you did it.

I've always assumed all skiers think it's worth it?
Thanks Wildernessed; we could see Stormy very well and it looked almost completely melted out!

Yes, i didn't really need to ask. It's true, and especially in late summer when TAY folks will hike for miles and hours to get in, say, 5 tight turns to keep a monthly streak going.....we all probably know some of them.
Good for them, and good for Richard!

Nice report!
I went up Hatchery Creek once in winter, but didn't get further than Point 7053. I found the forest difficult at the time when it was snowed in (but I've adjusted my acceptance levels of 'steep' since then ).
