To quote Mark Twain, in a round-about way --- it needed high-jacking.

presently nwhikers.net has 12,248 registered members.
another forum I frequent has 299,263 registered members.
most of the other forums I use have smaller membership numbers.
of all of them, only this one has the problem with the sniping and whining.
it's not the numbers.

I think it is because we are sitting at desks and it is not comfortable for us so we "kick the dog", in a manner of speaking, by ripping on fellow posters.
I am guessing other forums are frequented by a higher percentage of people who do not have an addiction to the outdoors so they are not as grumpy sitting at a desk.
I am purely speculating and have no data to support this.

Schenk, that is an interesting take on it, but
In the other discussion forums I frequent, the demographic is completely different - one that is regularly derided here in various threads - mostly in the form of remarks that have no basis in fact but rather are conjured up out of bias and fear.
None of the other forums I use focus on hiking per se, but the great majority of their memberships are "outdoorsy" type guys. (There are very few female members on any of them - a couple are the online equivalents of "Tool Time" or "The Red Green Show".)
So I would tend to think the problem is more one of some perceived sense of elitism, although I would concede I have seen episodes where weather patterns definitely were contributing to the "cranky factor".
I don't pretend to have all the answers on this one, but again I will submit that I don't believe it has anything at all to do with membership numbers.

IOW a monoculture where everyone agrees on the topics...
unlike this site which runs the full scale of opinion.
And these day nobody will admit that their sh## stinks and contributes to the problem. Everybody else's smells really bad but mine smells like freshly mowed grass and causes all problems to vanish.
I want what I want and I don't give a flying....what you think. Again, sniff the sh## waves wafting through the air, yours and mine are just as rank as the next guy's.
Since I have no expectations of forgiveness, I don't do it in the first place. That loop hole needs to be closed to everyone.

Ah, yes, there is probably a fair degree of elitism .
If you want a good dose of that go to a Flyfishing Forum hahaha

^ excellent example.
joined one in the hopes of identifying and ascertaining the value (if any) on a couple old rods that were gifted to me.
deleted my posts and deleted my membership in less than 48 hours.
kinda-sorta a similar dynamic in play here.... not to that degree, however.
on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd put flyfishing and antique hand plane forums at 11.
this one.... offhand I'd have to say about a 7... maybe an 8.
