The crux of this trip was successfully negotiating Road 302... where a high clearance vehicle is required. Shortly after passing the Salmon La Sac Guard Station and before the road crosses the Cle Elum River, find FS-4330 and head steeply uphill on the dirt road... drive 4330 for 7.6 miles and find the unsigned Road 302... then drive 302 for 2.5 miles and park where roads 302 and 301 junction. From where we parked (~4060 feet), we hiked Road 302 for a half-mile and found the North Fork Fortune Creek Trail #1339... which we followed for less than 2 miles to a junction (5860 feet) with County Line Trail #1226.2... then followed the County Line Trail a very short distance to Van Epps Pass. From the pass we continued east on a faint path that led us up the NW ridge of Van Epps Peak to the summit (7039')... where we found excellent views in all directions. From the Van Epps summit we stayed on the ridge leading over to Ingalls Peak... crossing over a 7000+ bump, Point 6955 and several other bumps as we worked our way over to Yellow Lichen Tower... where the terrain forced us to continue ~200 feet underneath the tower as we traversed a short distance beyond the tower until our turnaround time told us it was time to head for home... which we accomplished by going cross-county down to the County Line Trail (~6000 feet) which took us on over to Van Epps Pass... leaving a 2 mile hike back to our car. 8.3 miles roundtrip, gaining 3504 feet of elevation. The mile or so ridge scramble from the Van Epps summit over to Yellow Lichen Tower took us ~2 hours; however, a person could do it faster by choosing to bypass several of the high points along the ridge. Photos, trailhead directions and downloadable GPS track of our trip to Van Epps Peak. --
